Therapy FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

Is therapy right for me?

If you are asking yourself this question– it’s usually a sign therapy is right for you! People come to therapy for a variety of different reasons including feeling anxious, disorganized, frustrated, or just feeling “off”.

Although the reasons people seek therapy may be different, they usually find their symptoms are interfering with completing school work, fulfilling responsibilities or relationships. Sometimes, a person is just bothered by their symptoms, which is a good enough reason to start therapy.

Do you offer in person therapy?

Yes! We have a beautiful office located at 765 Post Road, 2nd Floor, Fairfield, CT 06824. This office is minutes away from downtown Fairfield and near two shopping plazas. Clients often reside in Fairfield, Westport or Greenwich and find our office to be conveniently located.

We offer both in person sessions and virtual sessions based on your preference and schedule.

What age groups do you work with?

Spencer McCauley and Teresa Giolitto currently serves clients 6-25 years old. We have specialized interest and training in children and adolescents in addition to the adult therapy training all therapists receive. We also work with parents of children.

If your child is 4 or 5 and you’re having difficulty finding services, call me for a free 15-minute consultation call and we can discuss if we can accommodate your needs.

Do you take insurance?

We are an out-of-network benefits provider. This means that if your insurance has out-of-network benefits you can be reimbursed for my services. Reimbursement rates vary and can range from 0-80% reimbursement. Please call your insurance provider to get a quote for reimbursement. Not all insurances reimburse for out-of-network benefits and it is important that you understand how much therapy will cost.

Since we are out-of-network, this means you will be responsible to pay the full fee at the time of our session. You will get a superbill* which you can submit to your insurance company and they will reimburse you based on your insurance coverage.

*A superbill is a list of services you received during a certain time period which your insurance will use to determine reimbursement.

How much will therapy cost?

Using your out of network (OON) benefits means it is hard for us to say how much your sessions will cost after reimbursement. Insurance companies will reimburse up to 80% of the cost of your session after you have hit your deductible. Please contact your insurance company to find out your unique benefits.

The fee we collect at the time of session will be between $175-$300 with sliding scale spots available.  This means if you are able to use your OON benefits and they are at a rate of 80% coverage you would be paying between $35-$60 per session after hitting your deductible.

What are the benefits of out of network insurance/private pay?

As stated above, all sessions are out of network (OON) or private pay.

If you choose private pay (meaning no reimbursement from your insurance company) you have more control over confidentiality. Since you are not going through your insurance company, they do not have access to your diagnosis or notes related to your services.

When you are private pay or using OON, your insurance company cannot dictate the number of sessions nor the interventions used. When you use in network insurance the insurance company will tell you how many sessions you can have and what interventions can be used. This affects your treatment and is not always created by a therapist nor is it based on the individual needs. With OON or private pay, we can create a therapeutic plan that truly aligns with your needs.

We do not need to assign you a diagnosis if you are private pay. (Diagnoses are a necessity when using in-network-insurance or to get out of network benefits).

What states do you serve?

We offer in-person sessions in Fairfield, CT and virtual sessions across CT. This means we often serve clients in Fairfield County or New Haven county (Fairfield, Westport, Greenwich, Weston, Wilton, Milford etc).

Spencer also provides virtual therapy to individuals in New York, and Massachusetts which is perfect for college aged clients who go between states.

What time are therapy sessions?

Spencer’s Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you become a therapist?

I love being a therapist. I became a therapist because I believe all people have inherent strengths and are deserving to be seen for these strengths. I am fascinated by how we all experience the world in different and unique ways. I am passionate about understanding others and am continually learning how to support my clients in the best way possible.

Since I am naturally curious about humans and why we are the way we are, I am constantly consuming mental health materials including reading books, listening to podcasts, watching movies, or following people on instagram with lived experiences. I think this blend of scientific research and individual experiences allows me to fill the gaps between group data (which is an average of experiences and oftentimes several years lagging) and individual experiences (usually more current and nuanced).

What do you specialize in?

I have extensive training in providing therapy to children, adolescents and young adults. I specialize in working with individuals with Social Anxiety, General Anxiety, Phobias, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Trauma and ADHD.

What are your credentials?

I am a therapist who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

I first received my Master’s in Social Work from Fordham University. I was selected into the competitive trauma track program which focused on using evidence based therapy with children who had experienced trauma.

To receive my LCSW I then spent 3+ years providing therapy to families, children, adolescents, and young adults under the supervision of an LCSW and passed two licensing exams.

I am licensed at the LCSW/LCISW level in CT, NY, and MA. This means I am regulated by the state and must reapply and continue taking classes to remain up to date on current therapies.

I have had training in Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Response Prevention, Parent Management Training, Child & Family Traumatic Stress EMDR and many other modalities. If you are interested in a specific type of therapy feel free to inquire in our consultation call.

I had the opportunity to continue my training with young adults, adolescents and children at The Yale Child Study Center, Bellevue Hospital, Mental Health Service Corps. and Association to Benefit Children. These experiences gave me extensive training in providing optimal therapeutic services to a variety of individuals with a variety of diagnoses.
